During this COVID-19 period, working from home can be challenging. Although the company has tried various methods to simplify the remote work of employees, it still uses unparalleled ideal infrastructure to work in the office to ensure the smooth progress of the work. To a small extent, WeTransfer can be used as a useful tool for people at home to easily transfer files. WeTransfer has been around for more than these lock-up times, but based on its use case, WeTransfer has recently gained attention.
Unexpectedly, WeTransfer users found that their remote shared file sharing service stopped working in India. the reason? No one knows, not even the Dutch developer behind the app. But according to the Mumbai Mirror, it is clear that the Indian government, or more precisely the Ministry of Telecommunications, has banned the WeTransfer website for public interest and national security reasons.
WeTransfer is banned in India
“WeTransfer seems to have been blocked and unavailable in India. We are working to understand the reason for this block and how to recover it as soon as possible. We know that many of you rely on us to send and receive transfers that are more important to you than ever. It ’s important at all times, so there are indeed many people who ca n’t use WeTransfer right now, which really makes us sad. ”WeTransfer responded to DoT ’s move.
According to the Mumbai Mirror, the move was not the result of a PIL or complaint (which is usually the case), but an independent decision of the ministry. The order sent to the Indian ISP required them to ban two specific URLs (whose content is still unknown) and ban the entire WeTransfer.com website. This move has not only been widely criticized, but also affected millions of users across India.
What are the options?
If you feel lost without WeTransfer, do n’t worry. You can also share files back and forth in other ways. However, if you insist on using WeTransfer in India, you can still use WeTransfer with the help of a virtual private network (VPN). There are several free VPNs available for download, all you need to do is run the VPN on your device and change your virtual location to anywhere outside of India in order to continue using WeTransfer.
Other viable alternatives for transferring files remotely include Google Drive and DropBox. However, if you are looking for an application for your smartphone, you can use many options like FileMail to fill the gap left by WeTransfer.
